Hazel Update

Last weekend, Hazel celebrated her 444th day of life.
In honor of her, I thought I'd record some of her milestones and personality blossoms from the past couple of months during my blogging inactivity.
It took me a long time to try giving her a sippy cup.  I think I'm becoming a more lazy parent has time goes on.  (or, more charitably, busier?)  As of November, she's been using one regularly.
As-of the end of November, she has been spotted standing hands free!  She, in the last week, has started taking a couple of steps on her own, between hand-holds, and can walk around pretty well while holding only one of my hands.  But she is still quite wobbly and not brave enough to try it on her own.  Not pictured, she is getting great at riding around on her "motorcycle", as we call it.  It's just a little blue wheeled push rider that is supposed to have a horse covering on it, but the kids always take it off.  The Frog used that same motorcycle to learn to walk, by pushing it around standing up, and Hazel does some of that as well.
We got Peach and The Frog these awesome bench-desks (which we didn't know, but it turns out they're made in Provo!  aaand I can't remember what they're called, sorry!) for them to do their "daddy school".  It has left quite an impression on Hazel, as I see her climbing up and adding her corrections to their work a lot. :)  Neither of my other kids had any interest in coloring until much much later.  (4 for The Frog and Peach still isn't really interested at 3).
Hazel also adores playing on the piano.  All of my kids have loved banging around on it a bit, but she will spend good amount of time there.  On this particular day, her playing was so entrancing, the other had to join in!
I can't believe how mature she is starting to look and less baby-like.  Luckily, she still has chunky baby thighs and I LOVE them!

We've had quite a bit of good snow for playing in this year, but by now, I have learned that if one can't walk yet, one doesn't often have fun in the snow (despite my past attempts) but on this particular day, Peach and The Frog went to my neighbor-swap preschool together and they thought it would be fun if I pulled them on a sled.  Hazel was sleeping at the time, but when I went back to pick them up, I thought I'd try her out and see how it went.
She actually really liked it!  She sat happily on the sled by herself and had fun running her hand through the snow at the sides.
However, once she had to share a sled with Peach (who kept pulling her back to keep her more "secure") she had enough.
Hazel has been babbling for quite some time- I don't remember my other kids babbling so much, but I feel like Peach must have, because she learned to speak so young... But Hazel manages to say things that sound exactly like phrases, not just words.  It's quite alarming!  We're still trying to figure out if she knows what they mean or not, but she seems to understand the right timing for them!

She has the typical "dada" and "mama" down, and lately has been saying "uh-oh" when anything drops to the floor.  (I think she often drops things on purpose, just so she can say it :D)  She also says "ah-duh" for "all done!" when she's done eating or needs help getting down from somewhere.  I'm pretty sure she calls herself "dah-dah", which makes sense if you know her real name :)

Before her nap, when I'm putting her in her sleep-sac, I usually have a little tickle session and say "tickle tickle tickle" while I'm doing it.  When I stop she'll grin and say "ti-ti-ti", asking for more :)

She is, much like The Frog, fascinated by lights and loves trying to flick the switches on and off.  She'll often point at lights around the house and say, "la!"

She is very conscious of things her sibling receive, or get to do, that she does not get to partake of and makes it very clear that she is upset about it!  Lately, she gets annoyed if I cut her food in smaller pieces than theirs.  One time, we all had leftovers for lunch- she and I had pasta and the other kids had soup.  She was really upset that she didn't get the same as them, even though she ate the pasta happily the night before with everyone.

I think she might be trying to go from 2 naps to 1, but her wake-up time has been very irregular, so I can't quite make the switch yet.
We sure adore this little chipmunk!  Every night, during family prayer, we go around the circle and all say something we're thankful for (to add to our prayer) and most nights, one or both of them says they are thankful for Hazel.  She is a little ray of sunshine in our family and I couldn't imagine life without her!!

Hazel Accomplishments!

Jay was gone all last week, and most of the week before, so I'm a bit lacking in the photos etc. to share this week, after being in "survival mode" for so long.  But, I'm excited to say that Hazel has:
1) started scooting backwards!
2) started spending quite a bit of time in "crawling position", though has yet to figure out how to actually crawl yet.
3) been doing great with her baby food eating!  Yesterday she set an all-time speed record- less than 10 minutes to eat her serving of sweet potato plus 1 T baby rice.  I feel selfish for celebrating such a feat, but baby food feeding gets really tedious and messy and isn't one of my favorite things about having a baby...
4) been taking terrible naps lately (as in, for the last few months) and I've finally decided it's time to help her out and get her on a more predictable schedule.  She finally took a long afternoon nap yesterday, and after crying to sleep last night, she only woke up once to eat!!  I'm sure I'm celebrating too early, but it looks like a longer chunks of sleep might actually be in my future!  (if I could just get The Frog to stop wetting the bed... through his pull-up...)

A Saturday

I just discovered that, though coloring with Crayons doesn't really attract The Frog, he loves using markers. I left him at the table for one minute and when I came back, he looked like this.
I really wonder what he was doing...
Peach is getting slowly better at lifting her head
And getting her fist to her mouth.
Here's The Frog peeking in at our photo shoot through the back window. I love that shirt because I think it makes him look like a little French painter.

First Shoes!

After the petting zoo experience, I realized it was time I buckled down (haha) and bought The Frog some real shoes- especially now that he's toddling around. Here's a little footage of his first day of walking free.

The Frog's 8th Month

Wow, I can hardly believe what the Frog has accomplished in the last month! Even the last week! It is so fascinating and amazing to see how much they progress so quickly! I've decided that he has officially said his first word and am very proud to say it is me :) He said mama awhile ago, but it wasn't clear to me whether or not he knew that it was a person. Now he says it when he comes to me and I've even noticed him look at me when Jay says "mama" or "mommy". I can't tell you how happy this makes me.

(take that dada ;D)

So now he's allowed to work on daddy. (Jay always joked that The Frog's first word would be "father")

Before I begin with all the photos, I just want to have a little disclaimer about all my posts today and all the pictures- they are not necessarily in chronological order.

The Frog is now a pro sippy-cup user. Look at that amazing form! Not pictured is his ability to also use a straw. (Which turns out to be easier, since no cup tipping is necessary)

The Frog is getting to be a very stable stander. My favorite is when he spreads his legs out really far like this.

Lately, I've been finding him under the kitchen table a lot, walking along the chairs. (and often finding a snack that I missed during my frequent sweeps)

I don't know what it is about Provo, but it seems like there are as many dollar stores here as there are Dunkin' Donuts in Providence, or Starbuck's in Seattle. One day, I just decided to go check one out and ended up leaving with a set of 5 whiffle balls for The Frog (they're perfect because he can stick his little fingers in the holes) and a new swimsuit.

Isn't it cute? Little did I know, we would be inheriting this much superior version from his East Coast Cousin.

Now all he needs is a surf board. And an ocean...

Now that the weather is beautiful, I've been trying to go walking every week-day and often by the end of my walk, I find The Frog in this very position. I've even tried making him lie back in a more comfortable position, but he always ends up back like this. Very strange.

I discovered a little park really close to our house and so I thought I would let The Frog try out their baby swings. Honestly, he seemed more interested in watching the other kids play, although he seemed to like it more when Jay holds The Frog in his lap.

The Frog's best friend came over today to play. It's so fun to watch them interact. Yes it's mostly just grabbing of body parts and climbing over one another, but it's still really fun. I'm excited for The Frog to have a sibling who is always around for him to play with.

This isn't anything particularly special, I just thought it was a very typical shot of a typical moment in his life. He is just so curious, always exploring... even if it is just a bunch of packages of baby wipes.

7 months!

The Frog has officially made it 7 months, and what a week he's had!

He's a pretty good eater, in that he really likes to eat whatever I'm eating... and he wants to do it himself. I always have to make sure he eats something on his own while I'm feeding him, or he gets upset.

We discovered that The Frog can sit-up by himself. I just didn't know because I never put him like that, besides in his high-chair, and he can't get into sitting position by himself. Although, as soon as he sees something he wants out of reach, he'll just topple over to get it.

As of Tuesday, he has started army-crawling around to get stuff. I ran to get the video camera as soon as I saw him do it, but he won't perform on command. I'm still not sure why sometimes he does it and sometimes he won't, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he gets into everything.

And then, I couldn't help but include a couple of extra-cute shots :D
