Calling All Mac 'n Cheese Lovers

So, I am on a quest to find the best macaroni and cheese recipe in the world.  Only one real stipulation- it's not allowed to contain American cheese, other than that, it's fair game.  I've tried the one in Joy of Cooking and was pretty underwhelmed by it.  Tonight I'm going to try out the one in "Favorites: A Collection of Ivory Family Favorite Recipes"- which recently produced a delightful Rolo Cookie (turns out to be the same recipe as the on you gave me Audra!) so I have high hopes.

However, if anyone out there has already found the best mac 'n cheese recipe in the world, I would be greatly indebted to you for sharing it with me :)  And trust me, I'm a great person to have as a creditor.

Did you know that I have never had homemade mac and cheese...because I haven't. When you find the best recipe I expect you to have me over for dinner.

Funny you should ask...last night on the Foodnetwork there was a recipe challenge show for the best macaroni and cheese. They all looked delightful and none of them used yucky ingredients like american cheese. I haven't tried any of them, but I bet their all available on the food network website. How do I get involved in the judging of the results of your recent quest??

Libby, I totally have that recipe book (the Ivory Family one) and I have made that mac and cheese a few times - it is pretty good! Although, if I remember correctly, it seems like you're supposed to cook it in the oven, but we kinda skipped that step and just poured the cheese sauce over the noodles and ate it. Hope you find a good one! :)

Yeah, we did bake it in the oven with some extra cheese on top, but I don't understand why, and I think next time I'll skip that step, and just add the the extra cheese to the cheese sauce.
All in all, we thought it was good, but I think I can do better :)

If you are open to reverse engineering, I highly suggest going to Mother's Bistro in Portland where I have had, easily, the best mac n cheese ever.

Oh, I'm completely open to reverse engineering. Now... if I could just figure out how to do it...
